Sherburne Memorial Library
—— Town of KillingtonLetter to family card holders
June 20, 2008
Dear Library User,
On July 1, a new law will go into effect that protects the confidentiality of library records. We have attached a copy of the statute. The Sherburne Memorial library was actively involved in getting the new statute passed because we believe the only way to assure the right to open inquiry is by assuring that the subject of one’s interest is not subject o the scrutiny of others. Personally identifiable information about users is confidential and the library keeps that information private and confidential on their behalf.
Library records may only be released under very specific conditions without the express consent of the individual. You are receiving this letter because the library has issued you a family card which means that everyone listed on the card may have access to the materials checked out on that card. In an effort to comply with the new law we are notifying you of the ramifications of having a family card and provide you with an opportunity to decide if you would like us to continue using the family card, or individual cards for everyone over age 8, or to just specific members of your family. Individuals may have both types of cards decide when checking out materials what account to use.
On your next visit to the library we will be asking your preference and updating your registration. If you continue with a family card we will request birth dates for all minors on the account. Minors 16 and over will be issued a new card, unless they sign a form stating their preference to remain on a family card. We will also be providing card holders with a password that will enable you to reserve and renew materials and provide access to remote databases from home.
The law gives custodial parents the right to request the library records of minors under age 16. For your protection, a custodial parent or guardian requesting records of minors with an individual card should be prepared to provide proof of the child’s age and their legal standing as guardian.
The Sherburne Memorial Library will strive to make this transition as easy as possible.
If you have any questions about this or any library service please don’t hesitate to call

Sincerely yours,
Gail Weymouth
